The Delhi Capitals (DC) returned to winning ways in the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 on Thursday at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, defeating Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) by four wickets. Kuldeep Yadav was the pick of the bowlers, continuing his outstanding run with the ball and helping DC to a critical victory with a four-wicket haul. With DC needing 147 runs, Umesh Yadav grabbed a fantastic catch off his own bowling to dismiss Prithvi Shaw on the first ball of the innings. Mitchell Marsh was dismissed by Harshit Rana, who took his first IPL wicket.
As DC reached 47/2 at the end of the powerplay, David Warner was on the move with five fours and was joined by Lalit Yadav. For the third wicket, the pair put up a fifty-run stand. After 9 overs, DC were 80-2 thanks to Yadav's six and four. With the wicket of Warner, who was caught in the deep for 42, Umesh Yadav got KKR back in the game. KKR took two wickets in quick succession, dismissing Lalit Yadav and DC captain Rishabh Pant. Pant was caught behind off Yadav's bowling while Lalit Yadav was trapped LBW by Narine.
Axar Patel smashed two fours and a six before being run out for 24 as DC needed 34 runs off the final five overs. After Rovman Powell hit a four and a six in the 17th over, DC allowed 14 runs, pushing them closer to the mark. Powell closed up the chase with a maximum with only 4 runs needed off the final two overs. Earlier, KKR, who were assigned to bat first, made three changes to their lineup: Aaron Finch, Harshith Rana, and Baba Indrajith. In the second over, DC got off to a good start thanks to Chetan Sakariya. Aaron Finch was dropped before the next delivery, and the opener was bowled.
KKR were 29-2 at the end of the powerplay after Venkatesh Iyer was caught at short fine-leg off Axar Patel's bowling. As Kuldeep Yadav struck twice in the ninth over, KKR lost the wickets of Baba Indrajith and Sunil Narine on successive deliveries. KKR were 56-4 at the half-way stage, led by skipper Shreyas Iyer and Nitish Rana. In the 12th over, Iyer relieved the pressure by hitting two fours. In the next over, Rana hit the first six runs of the innings. Kuldeep Yadav, on the other hand, didn't let the momentum slide away, scalping Iyer and Andre Russell in the same over to pick up a four-wicket haul.
Nitish Rana resumed the flow of runs from one end, hitting three fours and as many sixes as KKR reached 128-6 at the end of 18 overs. With a six, Rana completed his fifty. On the other end, Rinku Singh smashed three fours as the duo put together a crucial fifty partnership. In the first innings, Mustafizur Rahman took three wickets in the final over to reduce KKR to 146-9.
