Match 35: Gujarat Titans won by 8 runs

The Gujarat Titans (GT) defeated the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) by 8 runs in a last-over thriller at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai on Saturday in the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022. Gujarat Titans won by 8 runs in a final-over thriller as Hardik Pandya led from the front and steadied them to a respectable total of 156-9. KKR lost two early wickets as openers Sam Billings and Sunil Narine were sent back to the pavilion, while Mohammad Shami took two wickets. After being caught behind by Lockie Ferguson's bowling, Nitish Rana became the second player to be dismissed.

KKR were 34-3 at the end of the powerplay when Shreyas Iyer was caught behind for his first wicket of the innings by Yash Dayal. KKR reached 50 in the eighth over, thanks to Rinku Singh and Venkatesh Iyer, who kept the runs coming. Rinku Singh smashed four fours and a six before being caught behind by Yash Dayal, who took his second wicket of the innings. Andre Russell was caught at fine-leg, but the all-rounder was able to escape as Yash Dayal overstepped in the 13th over.

Russell hit two sixes later, but Venkatesh Iyer was dismissed at the other end after the left-handed batter holed out to the deep off Rashid Khan's bowling and was caught by Abhinav Manohar in the outfield. Before Rashid Khan castled Shivam Mavi for his second wicket, KKR needed 50 off the final five. In the 17th over, Shami gave only 8 runs, and KKR needed 37 runs off 18 deliveries. Umesh Yadav and Russell both blasted sixes to reduce the equation to 18 off six deliveries.

Russell hit a six on the first ball, but Ferguson took a wonderful sprinting catch to dismiss him as GT defended the total to win by eight runs. Earlier, GT chose to bat first, with skipper Hardik Pandya returning to the lineup. Shubman Gill, who was caught behind down the leg side, was the first wicket taken by KKR. After Hardik Pandya and Wriddhiman Saha batted strongly, GT were 47-1 after 6 overs, despite the strain of losing an early wicket. In the eighth over, GT captain debuted the ramp shot for a maximum against Shivam Mavi and afterwards lofted Chakaravarthy for a six.

GT were 78-1 when Umesh Yadav ended the partnership by dismissing Saha for 25, who was caught at backward point. Hardik Pandya scored his third half-century of the season, and GT reached 100 runs in the 13th over. GT were 127/2 with 5 overs to go after David Miller smashed two sixes and a four. Mavi returned to bowl his third over and struck out Miller for 27. Southee removed the dangerous Pandya twice in his final over, followed by an important wicket of Rashid Khan.

Andre Russell took four wickets in the final over of the innings to help KKR restrict GT to 156/9.

Scores: Gujarat Titans 156/9 (Hardik Pandya 67, David Miller 27; Andre Russell 4-5) beat Kolkata Knight Riders 148/8 (Andre Russell 48, Rinku Singh 35; Mohammad Shami 2-20) by 8 runs.

In the first innings, Marco Jansen and T Natarajan each took three wickets to restrict RCB to 68 runs before SRH chased down the goal with 12 overs to spare. To get things started, Abhishek Sharma did the brunt of the hitting and played several nice shots at the top.

In the fifth over, Williamson captured Glenn Maxwell with a diving catch at extra-cover. RCB led 25-4 at the end of the powerplay. Suyash Prabhudessai and the hazardous Dinesh Karthik were then both dismissed by Jagadeesha Suchith. In the ninth over, Dinesh Karthik was caught behind for 15, while Prabhudessai was stumped for 15.

RCB's woes were compounded when Shahbaz Ahmed was caught behind by Umran Malik's bowling. Harshal Patel's stumps were shaken by Natarajan, who was followed by Wanindu Hasaranga to take the next two wickets, and RCB were reduced to 9 for 15 overs. RCB were 68 all out in the first innings when Bhuvneshwar Kumar claimed the final wicket of the innings after SRH skipper Williamson made a running catch to remove Mohammed Siraj.
