59th match, CSK vs MI: Mumbai Indians won by 5 wickets
The Mumbai Indians (MI) won the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 on Thursday at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai after defeating the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) by 5 wickets. In the first innings, a strong bowling performance highlighted by Daniel Sam's three wicket haul reduced CSK to 97 before a crucial partnership between Tilak Varma and Hrithik Shokeen propelled MI to a 5-wicket victory. MI lost Ishan Kishan's wicket in the first over of their chase for 98, as the opener was caught behind off Mukesh Choudhary's bowling.
MI got off to a good start thanks to Rohit Sharma's exquisite shots. However, off the bowling of Simarjeet Singh, the MI captain was caught behind. Mukesh Choudhary trapped both Daniel Sams and Tristan Stubbs LBW in the fifth over. With Tilak Varma and Hrithik Shokeen in the crease, MI led 36-4 at the end of the powerplay. The duo formed an important alliance that helped MI go to 66-4 at the midway point, as they needed 32 out of 60 deliveries.
Before Moeen Ali tricked Shokeen and castled the stumps, the duo kept ticking the runs. Tim David clobbered a maximum and hit the winning runs in the 15th over with only 9 runs required.
CSK, who were given the opportunity to bat first, stayed unchanged from the previous game. In Daniel Sams' first over, CSK lost in-form Devon Conway and Moeen Ali. CSK were reduced to 5-3 as Robin Uthappa got trapped LBW by Jasprit Bumrah's wicket-maiden. Ruturaj Gaikwad was caught down the leg side, giving Sams his third wicket inside the powerplay. After Riley Meredith dismissed Ambati Rayudu and Shivam Dube, MS Dhoni remained at the crease, but MI continued to put pressure on the CSK hitters.
Dhoni hit his first six of the innings, and CSK were 65/6 at the halfway mark. Dwayne Bravo and Simarjeet Singh were both dismissed in the 13th over by Kumar Kartikeya. Bravo was dismissed by Tilak Varma with a brilliant catch, while Simarjeet got trapped LBW. After Maheesh Theekshana was caught by Rohit off Ramandeep Singh's bowling, CSK lost their 9th wicket. CSK were all out for 97 runs when Ishan Kishan hit Mukesh Choudhary with a hard hit.
