"Bold decisions must be made with India's XI," according to Gavaskar: "He should be an automatic choice for the first Test vs. Australia."
About
Australia and Team India will play each other in the first of four Test matches on Thursday in Nagpur. There has been a lot of debate about India's starting lineup before the match, with many claiming that Shubman Gill should be given preference over KL Rahul, who is making his comeback after a layoff for personal reasons.
In recent games, Gill has scored centuries in all three formats and is currently in a good mood. But because he and KL Rahul both desire to bat first in the order, the management is faced with a difficult decision.
What they said
"Shubman Gill should be selected without hesitation for the opening Test match against Australia since he is in excellent shape and touch. The two established openers are skipper Rohit Sharma and opener KL Rahul, so there is a catch there. So where can Gill find a place to stay? Rahul can bat lower in the order because he just took a short rest and could value the extra time it affords him," the former India batsman told Midday.
"It would be preferable if Rahul could keep wickets and boost the middle order if Shreyas Iyer is healthy. It would be difficult for KS Bharat, who has been eagerly awaiting his India debut, but team dynamics occasionally call for daring decisions to be made by the team management and selectors. If Iyer is unfit, the captain's and management's problems may be resolved."
Overview
Batting icon Sunil Gavaskar expressed his thoughts on the matter and recommended that both players be included in the starting XI for the first game of the series. Gill and the captain, Rohit Sharma, should open the innings, according to Gavaskar, while Rahul should bat a little lower in the order to add some additional steadiness to the middle order.
Another audacious recommendation from Gavaskar was that Rahul should maintain wickets rather than KS Bharat, who would be aiming for his first India cap after spending a lot of time in Rishabh Pant's shadow.
