Virat Kohli steps down as India’s Test captain

Virat Kohli has led India in 68 Tests winning 40 of them since taking over from MS Dhoni 7 years ago.

Virat Kohli announced on Saturday 15 January, 2022, that he is stepping down as India's Test captain.

A day after the 2-1 series loss to South Africa, the 33-year-old announced his decision on Twitter. Kohli was replaced as India's ODI captain for the South Africa series by Rohit Sharma, who stepped down as T20I captain after the T20 World Cup in November.

Kohli has led India in 68 Tests since taking over from MS Dhoni during the series against Australia in 2014, winning 40, losing 17, and drawing 11.

He is behind Australian great Ricky Ponting and West Indies legend Clive Lloyd in terms of most Test victories as a captain.

Kohli expressed gratitude to his mentor MS Dhoni and former head coach Ravi Shastri for entrusting him with the captaincy. India regained No. 1 in Tests under Kohli, winning their 1st Test series in Australia in 2019-20 and dominating overseas Tests against England.

He expressed gratitude to the BCCI and his teammates for believing in him and his mission.
