57th match, LSG vs GT: Gujarat Titans won by 62 runs
After defeating the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) by 62 runs on Tuesday at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune, the Gujarat Titans (GT) became the first side to qualify for the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 playoffs. After a stunning 62-run triumph, Shubman Gill's undefeated half-century and Rashid Khan's brilliant four-wicket haul ensured GT's place in the playoffs. LSG openers KL Rahul and Quinton de Kock were conservative with the bat as they chased 145 for win. De Kock smashed the opening six of the innings, but Yash Dayal's bowling caught him inside the circle. In the fifth over, Shami took the wicket of the LSG captain.
After rookie Karan Sharma was caught at short third man, GT were in trouble. After Krunal Pandya was out stumped, Rashid Khan struck soon after being added to the attack. After Sai Kishore claimed his maiden IPL wicket by dismissing Ayush Badoni, Saha produced the second stumping of the innings. After losing the wickets of Marcus Stoinis and Jason Holder, GT were 7 down. Holder was stranded LBW off Rashid Khan's bowling, while Stonis was run-out due to miscommunication in the middle. In the 14th over, Sai Kishore took his second wicket, dismissing Mohsin Khan, before Rashid Khan wrapped up the innings with the final two wickets.
GT made three changes earlier in the day, opting to bat first. Matthew Wade, Sai Kishore, and Yash Dayal were named in the eleven. After Wriddhiman Saha and Matthew Wade were ejected in the powerplay, LSG made early gains. First, Mohsin Khan's bowling caught Saha within the circle. Wade was then ejected by Avesh Khan after he was found behind the plate. After Shubman Gill produced some wonderful strokes for four, GT were 35-2 at the end of six overs.
The next hitter to retire was Hardik Pandya, who was caught behind by Avesh Khan, who took his second wicket of the game. GT was down 59-3 at the halftime break. After the 15th over, David Miller and Shubman Gill stitched a steady partnership and accelerated. After firing Miller, Jason Holder ended the partnership. After Gill's half-century, GT were 117-4 with three overs to go. GT reached 144/4 in the first innings thanks to three important fours from Rahul Tewatia in the final over.
