The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) returned to winning ways in the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 on Thursday at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai, defeating the Mumbai Indians (MI) by three wickets. MSD guided CSK to victory with his calm demeanour, completing the game in style with the bat after Mukesh Choudhary shone with bowling numbers of 3-19. CSK lost Ruturaj Gaikwad's wicket on the opening delivery of the innings while chasing 156, as the opener was caught at point by Daniel Sams.
Mitchell Santner, who was moved up the order, hit two four-run home runs, but became Sams' second victim after being caught by Unadkat. In the fifth over, Ambati Rayudu countered with two maximums, while Robin Uthappa smashed two fours. CSK were 46-2 at the end of the powerplay when Uthappa finished it up with a six. After Uthappa's second six of the innings, CSK reached 50 in the eighth over. In the ninth over, however, the opener was caught in the deep by Unadkat's bowling.
At the 10-over mark, CSK were 68-3. Ambati Rayudu and Shivam Dube both hit sixes, but Daniel Sams drew MI back into the game after Dube was caught behind. Rayudu was dismissed by Sams for his fourth wicket of the innings, and CSK needed 53 runs off the final five balls. Riley Meredith took CSK skipper Ravindra Jadeja's wicket in the 16th over and only gave up 5 runs. MS Dhoni smacked a four and Dwaine Pretorius hit a six to reduce the equation to 28 off 12 deliveries.
CSK needed 17 runs off 6 deliveries after scoring 11 runs in the previous over. MS Dhoni remained composed throughout the game, scoring one six and two fours to help CSK cross the finish line. MI made three changes earlier in the day, with Daniel Sams, Hrithik Shokeen, and Riley Meredith being included in the eleven. With two wickets in the first over, Mukesh Choudhary gave CSK a fairytale start with the ball. While MI skipper Rohit Sharma was caught at mid-on, the bowler uprooted Ishan Kishan's off-stump.
Suryakumar Yadav smashed three fours, but Choudhary claimed his third wicket when Dewald Brevis was caught behind for four runs. After six overs, MI were 42-3. Suryakumar Yadav, the dangerous right-handed batsman, was caught at long-leg by Mitchell Santner for 32 runs. At the half, Michigan led 56-4. To relieve the pressure, debutant Hrithik Shokeen smashed two fours and Tilak Varma swept a six. After Shokeen was captured by Uthappa, Dwayne Bravo put an end to the relationship. MI reached 100 runs in the 15th over, when Keiron Pollard hit a four and a massive maximum straight down the ground.
After right-handed hitter Pollard was caught off Maheesh Theekshana's bowling, a strategic field placement near the ropes put an end to his innings. In the 18th over, Bravo trapped Daniel Sams LBW. Tilak Varma reached his half-century with a six in the penultimate over. As MI reached 155-7 in the first innings, Jaydev Unadkat closed the innings with a four and a six.
