The Delhi Capitals (DC) returned to winning ways in the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 on Wednesday at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai, defeating the Punjab Kings (PBKS) by 9 wickets. After a full effort from the DC bowlers reduced PBKS to 115, the team won comfortably with almost 9 overs to spare thanks to explosive knocks from David Warner and Prithvi Shaw. DC openers David Warner and Prithvi Shaw got off to a good start, as DC were 43-0 after three overs, chasing 116 to win. Shaw hit the first six runs of the game in the third inning, while both openers hit four fours. In just 21 deliveries, the initial wicket fell for a fifty-run partnership.
Warner smashed three fours against Rabada in the fourth over, scoring 15 runs. As DC cruised to an 81-0 lead at the end of the powerplay, the duo cashed in on every occasion. With a superb catch in the outfield by Nathan Ellis, Rahul Chahar, who bowled the next over, ended the opening partnership by dismissing Shaw for 41. Warner hit a six and a four in the ninth over, while new hitter Sarfaraz Khan added a four as well.
DC won by 9 wickets with more than 9 overs to spare, thanks to Warner's third consecutive half-century of the season and a four to round off the chase. Mayank Agarwal and Nathan Ellis replaced Prabhsimran Singh and Odean Smith, respectively, for PBKS, who were assigned to bat first. Mayank Agarwal, the PBKS captain, started the innings on a high note, smashing three fours in the third over before Dhawan was caught behind by Lalit Yadav, who provided the first breakthrough. Within the powerplay, PBKS lost two more wickets. In the sixth over, Livingstone was out stumped by Axar Patel, while Agarwal chopped on against Mustafizur.
Bairstow was caught at fine leg off Khaleel Ahmed's bowling with PBKS on 47-3 after 6 overs. With five fours from Jitesh Sharma, PBKS reached the halfway mark with a score of 77-4. After Jitesh Sharma got stranded LBW, Axar Patel broke the partnership. After Kagiso Rabada and Nathan Ellis were dismissed, Kuldeep Yadav struck twice in the next over. After Shahrukh Khan was caught behind for 12, Khaleel Ahmed took his second wicket.
Before being caught in the deep, Rahul Chahar added another 12 runs to the score. PBKS scored 115 in the first innings, with DC conceding only 6 runs in the final two overs.
