23rd match, PBKS vs MI, IPL 2022: Punjab Kings won by 12 runs

The Punjab Kings (PBKS) returned to winning ways in the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 on Wednesday at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune, defeating the Mumbai Indians (MI) by 12 runs. After amazing fifties at the top from Mayank Agarwal and Shikhar Dhawan propelled PBKS to 198-5 in the first innings, PBKS held their nerves and comfortably defended the goal of 199. Mumbai Indians, chasing 199, got off to a good start with the bat, scoring 21 in the first two overs.

PBKS, on the other hand, did not waste any time in claiming their first wicket, with skipper Rohit Sharma being caught at backward square leg by Vaibhav Arora. Ishan Kishan was caught behind off Arora's bowling in the next over. At the completion of the powerplay, MI was up 42-2. After hitting two fours and a six, right-handed batter Dewald Brevis was swiftly on the move. As the 9th over yielded 29 runs, Tilak Varma smashed two consecutive fours before Brevis smashed four sixes in a succession against Rahul Chahar. At the other end, Tilak Varma was ripping sixes as MI flew past 100 in the tenth over.

Brevis was given a reprieve on 49, but PBKS took their third wicket of the innings when the right-handed hitter was caught on the next delivery. After Tilak Varma was run out in the 13th over, MI needed 68 off 42 deliveries. To bring MI closer, Suryakumar smashed a maximum against Rabada. MI lost Pollard's wicket after the right-handed batter was run-out for 10 with 49 needing off the final four overs. Suryakumar, on the other hand, smashed two sixes in the final three overs to reduce the score to 33. In the 18th over, Arshdeep Singh conceded only 5 runs as MI needed 28 runs off 12 deliveries. Suryakumar Yadav, the right-handed hitter, was caught in the deep by Rabada, who took the crucial wicket.

PBKS won the game by 12 runs thanks to Odean Smith's three wickets in the final over. PBKS, who were given the opportunity to bat first, stayed unchanged from the previous game. Mayank Agarwal, the captain, got off to a good start with two excellent strokes for four points. To get off the mark, Dhawan went one step further by smashing an overhead shot for a maximum. After four overs, PBKS were 36/0. Agarwal blasted two fours and a six against Murugan Ashwin in the fifth over, scoring 17 runs. PBKS were cruising at 65/0 at the end of powerplay.

As skipper Agarwal hit his half-century with a maximum, PBKS continued to strike at a rate of 10 runs per over. Agarwal's excellent innings came to an end when he was caught in the deep by Suryakumar Yadav off Ashwin's bowling. PBKS were 99-1 at the midway point, and opener Shikhar Dhawan was joined by Jonny Bairstow, who lofted Tymal Mills' delivery to score his first four of the innings in the 13th over. MI battled back with two wickets in two overs after Dhawan's half-century. Bumrah rattled Liam Livingstone's stumps, while Jaydev Unadkat bowled Bairstow. PBKS were 132-3 with 5 overs remaining and Dhawan still at the crease. Before being caught in the deep in the 17th over, the left-handed batter hit a six on one knee against Thampi

In the 18th over, new batter Jitesh Sharma whacked two fours and as many sixes against Unadkat, while Shahrukh Khan slammed two sixes in the last over before being bowled by Basil Thampi, bringing PBKS' total to 198-5.
