11th match, CSK vs PBKS, IPL 2022: PBKS won by 54 runs
The Punjab Kings (PBKS) won the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 on Sunday at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai, defeating the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) by 54 runs. In Punjab Kings' sweeping victory over CSK, Liam Livingstone led from the front with an all-round performance that included his maiden IPL half-century and two key wickets with the ball. After openers Ruturaj Gaikwad and Robin Uthappa returned to the hut, CSK did not get off to a good start with the bat, chasing 181. Dhawan caught Ruturaj in the slips, while PBKS skipper Agarwal took Uthappa's leading edge. Kagiso Rabada and Vaibhav Arora both took two wickets.
With the new ball, PBKS continued to apply pressure, with Vaibhav Arora claiming his second wicket after Moeen Ali dragged a delivery onto the stumps. After Arora disturbed the wood in the final over of the powerplay, CSK skipper Ravindra Jadeja was out for a duck, and CSK were 27-4 after 6 overs. CSK's woes worsened as half the team returned to the pavilion after Odean Smith added to his wicket record by dismissing Rayudu in the eighth over. Shivam Dube opted to counter-attack when the asking rate rose, and the left-handed batsman whacked five fours and one six.
CSK, on the other hand, needed 108 from the remaining seven overs. After the Dube struck successive sixes to reach fifty off just 26 deliveries, Rabada bowled the 14th over, which yielded 18 runs for the sixth wicket. Liam Livingstone broke the Dube-Dhoni partnership by taking two key wickets in a row. Bravo was caught and bowled while Dube was caught at short-third man. In the 16th over, Rahul Chahar let up a six but recovered to dismiss Pretorius. Before Dhoni smashed a four and a six against Livingstone, CSK needed 74 off the final four. However, the former CSK captain was caught behind by rookie Jitesh Sharma, who took a sharp catch behind the stumps. In the 18th over, Chahar took his third wicket as PBKS wrapped up the CSK innings and won the game by 74 runs.
The Punjab Kings, who were given the opportunity to bat first, made two changes to their lineup: Jitesh Sharma and Vaibhav Arora were picked in the starting eleven. CSK got off to a great start with the ball, taking two early wickets. While PBKS captain Mayank Agarwal was caught inside the circle, Bhanuka Rajapaksa was run out for 9 thanks to MS Dhoni and Chris Jordan's outstanding fielding.
Liam Livingstone, on the other hand, made a grand entrance, smashing four fours and three sixes to relieve PBKS' early-wicket pressure. Livingstone was aided by Shikhar Dhawan's strong strokes, and PBKS were 72-2 at the end of the powerplay. In the tenth over, Livingstone, who was dropped by Rayudu off Jadeja's bowling, completed his maiden IPL fifty, as PBKS flew past 100. CSK fought back by taking two wickets in two overs, dismissing both Dhawan and Livingstone. While Bravo dismissed Dhawan, Jadeja took the initiative and took Livingstone's wicket, which was caught by Rayudu.
Jitesh Sharma, a debutant for PBKS, kept the momentum going by playing confidently, slamming three sixes before being removed for 26 by Dwaine Pretorius in the 15th over. Jordan, on the other side, ended Shahrukh Khan's innings when the right-handed hitter was caught for six runs by Pretorius. At the end of 16 overs, PBKS were 152-6. Jordan took his second wicket of the innings in the 18th over, dismissing Odean Smith. Before being caught in the deep by Bravo, Rahul Chahar hit a four and a six. Dwayne Bravo let up only 4 runs in the final over as PBKS put up a total of 180/8 in the first innings.
