SA20 2025 Season Kickoff: Sunrisers Eastern Cape vs MI Cape Town
The third season of South Africa's marquee T20 league, SA20, is set to start on Thursday, January 9, with a match between the defending champions and two-time winners, Sunrisers Eastern Cape, and MI Cape Town. The inaugural match will take place at the Sunrisers' home ground, St. George's Park in Gqeberha.
The match fixtures for the season also confirmed the final, to be held on February 8, at the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg, marking the second time the venue has hosted the final in the competition's history.
The runners-up from the previous two seasons, Pretoria Capitals and Durban Super Giants, will compete at Kingsmead on the second day of the competition. The season's first double-header is scheduled for the first Saturday with Paarl Royals hosting the champions, and Joburg Super Kings playing against MI Cape Town at Newlands later in the day.
Upon completing 30 league matches, the top four teams in the standings will proceed to the playoffs. Gqeberha is slated to host Qualifier 1 on February 4, and SuperSport Park in Centurion will host its first post-league games serving as the venue for the Eliminator (February 5) and Qualifier 2 (February 6). A day's break will follow before the final match.
This season will also witness the introduction of several big names to the SA20. Former New Zealand captain Kane Williamson has opted to play for the Durban Super Giants, subsequently deciding against a New Zealand Cricket central contract. Furthermore, the Paarl Royals will be bolstering their squad with former India keeper-bat Dinesh Karthik, who is 39 years old, and England legend Joe Root.
