The Australian batters received harsh criticism from former Indian cricket team captain Dilip Vengsarkar after the tourists were soundly defeated in the second game of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy on Sunday.
Australia lost eight wickets in the first session of Day 3, but only for 80 runs, with the majority of those wickets coming from sweep shots. On Indian soil, the sweep has been the foreign batsmen's go-to shot since it helps them avoid the spinners. Vengsarkar contends that the Aussies lack the necessary skill set and that the margin of error is too small.

"Unfortunately, Aussies are not accustomed to playing good quality spin; batting against spinners is an art. Sweep could be a key component of your strategy, but there is very little room for error, according to Vengsarkar, who spoke to PTI.
"Sweep is difficult to control, much like the hook shot off pacers. Surprisingly, the footwork has been inadequate. There is not enough skill. Few of them do I see getting out and driving."
"Nowadays, they prefer reverse sweeps. You don't often see the element of batting where you have to work hard for runs. The batters now have it harder thanks to DRS. Even when they are in full stride, they are given the LBW. Everyone wants constant ball play (without using the pad)," he explained.
