Guardiola's Mountain: Rodri's ACL Injury Challenges Man City

Pep Guardiola is grappling with formidable challenges this season at Manchester City, one of them being the grim news of Rodri's ACL injury. This injury could potentially keep the midfielder out of the game until next season, posing a daunting hurdle for Guardiola and his team.

Rodri, the defensive midfielder, would have to undergo surgery due to a tear in the ACL of his right knee. This injury occurred during an innocuous collision with Thomas Partey of Arsenal, only 20 minutes into Sunday's 2-2 draw against the Gunners at the Etihad.

Rodri's reaction to the injury, his significant on-field treatment, and his signal to Guardiola that it was "over" strongly indicated the impending bad news. Guardiola substantiated the seriousness of the situation in his post-match comments, stating that Rodri "is strong... his action is he felt something otherwise he would stay there".

The unfortunate news was confirmed following scans in Spain on Monday, resulting in a significant setback for City. Guardiola counts on Rodri, the 28-year-old former Atletico Madrid player, as reflected in his remarks from February describing Rodri as "the best midfield player in the world by far".

Rodri is practically irreplaceable as his impressive record with City demonstrates. The team has lost just one game in 2024 with Rodri on the pitch, and their league run appears even better with him in the team.

According to ESPN's Stats & Information Group, Rodri is the world's best in his position. Last season, the Spanish midfielder led the Premier League in touches (4,124), completed passes (3,359), progressive passes (521), carries (2,629), and carry distance (11,662 meters/12,754 yards). His statistics also peg him as a key player in tackle attempts (70), successful tackles (43), successful duels (174), and aerial duels won (55). Now, Pep Guardiola and his team must face the rest of the season without this valuable player.
