The new-look introduced top-tier teams Manchester City and Internazionale clashing during the league phase instead of later knockout rounds. Despite the neck-to-neck battle, the match ended in a 0-0 draw. 

Henrikh Mkhitaryan's missed opportunity from Inter shrilled the crowd while depriving the match of potential goals. An exceptionally good opportunity had Inter's manager Simone Inzaghi dropping to his knees, viscerally pounding the turf. Matteo Darmian of Inter attempted another misplaced move, trying to backheel the ball to Nicolò Barella when a shot seemed like the obvious choice. These missed chances almost cost Internazionale the match when Manchester City’s Ilkay Gündogan got two opportunities for close-range headers in the final minutes. 

Despite the tense standoff and missed chances, both Inzaghi and Pep Guardiola, Manchester City’s manager, could argue their team deserved a win, yet likely felt secretly relieved to evade a loss. "We played so good," Guardiola said, praising both his own team and Internazionale's defending skills. 

Manchester City, not having lost a Champions League group stage game at the Etihad since six years ago, seems to cruise through the early stages, yet Internazionale’s resilient performance presented a reminder of the new challenges the league phase introduces. Despite Inter being underrepresented odds-wise in this match, they remain Italy's best team and posed a formidable threat to Guardiola’s team. Inter's Barella adeptly navigated the field, continually getting under Guardiola's skin. 

The match saw Inter taking 10 shots in the first half – a feat not seen in the Etihad since AS Monaco's attempt in February 2017. The tension of the match marked a defining point in this revamped phase of the Champions League, and though it ended goalless, the game was far from being devoid of action.
