Rough Play Warning for Spain's Lamine Yamal
Spain's coach, Luis de la Fuente has issued a stern warning to wunderkind Lamine Yamal to toughen up. Following the UEFA Nations League 1-0 triumph over Denmark, Yamal, who plays for Barcelona, was the target of several hard tackles from the Danish team and was spotted limping back to the team bus post-match.
"Lamine has to get acclimated to such toughness. While I would prefer a gentler sport environment, it is not the reality. He conclusively demonstrated exceptional attitudes and contributions from the right flank with his unique talent," De la Fuente affirmed in a news briefing. He also highlighted the necessity for referees to play their part in safeguarding gifted players like Yamal, who often become intimidation targets due to their prowess.
Victor Kristiansen, the Leicester City and Denmark defender, defended the harsh play, claiming his intention wasn't to earn a yellow card but was to show Yamal that he too was a formidable opponent.
Despite the young star player's apparent limp, Spain's team sources dismissed its importance ahead of the Nations League match against Serbia. A statement from the Spanish football federation (RFEF) on Sunday announced Yamal's return to Barcelona before playing the second game, and an MRI scan confirmed the absence of any "structural" injury. It also said the discomfort was due to workload, a relief for Barça who face a barrage of challenging games post the international break.
