Sachin Tendulkar's record of 100 centuries can be surpassed by Virat Kohli: Ricky Ponting

About

When Kohli scored 122 not out off 61 balls against Afghanistan in the Asia Cup earlier this month, he snapped a 1,020-day drought for his 71st international century. "Look, I'll never say never with Virat because, once he starts going, you know how hungry and determined he is to succeed. I'll never say never, that much is certain, Ricky Ponting stated.

Kohli equaled Ponting's feat of 71 tonnes during his century. Tendulkar is the only person listed above Kohli on the list of most hundreds made.

What He said

When asked if Kohli needed another rest, Ponting responded, "Yes, that's a pretty good question, and that's probably a question only he could answer." It will simply depend on how he is mentally feeling again.

"When you're playing, you never realise how exhausted you are until you take a step back because you're always bluffing yourself and convincing yourself that you are 100% right physically and mentally. Sometimes you're a long way away from that. And I believe Virat has publicly acknowledged that as well, saying that he simply wasn't aware of how bad of a situation he was in until he received that prolonged break," Ponting said.

"If Virat continues to score runs, he'll definitely play the following series. I believe he will want to continue playing if he does it and does it effectively while beginning to take on a bit of a role. He would want to maintain the momentum," Ponting Said.

Overview

Following a month-long vacation, Kohli joined the Indian team competing in the Asia Cup. Three Twenty20 Internationals between Team India and Australia will start on Tuesday at Mohali. Before taking off for Australia, they will play South Africa in three ODIs and three T20Is.

Ponting continued, "But if Virat does have a little bit of a lean period again, It'll probably be in his and India's interest to try to freshen him up mentally as much as they can coming into the World Cup."
