Shimron Hetmyer Rejoins West Indies ODI Squad for England Series
Shimron Hetmyer has been reinstated in the West Indies ODI team for the home series against England. The last ODI game including Hetmyer was against the same opponent in December 2023. Despite not having a single half-century since his century against India in December 2019, he is part of the squad.
Hetmyer's inclusion in lieu of Alick Athanaze is the single alteration to the 15-player squad that recently went on a tour to Sri Lanka. During the tour, Athanaze scored 10 and 1 in the series and missed the final ODI, which was won by West Indies.
The concluding game saw Evin Lewis replacing Athanaze and scoring a quick century, contributing to the upbeat ending of the tour. Similarly, 17-year-old Jewel Andrew, who debuted in the final match of the ODI series but did not have a chance to bat, retains his place in the squad.
The squad comprises Shai Hope (C), Alzarri Joseph, Jewel Andrew, Shimron Hetmyer, Keacy Carty, Roston Chase, Matthew Forde, Shamar Joseph, Brandon King, Evin Lewis, Gudakesh Motie, Jayden Seales, Romario Shepherd, and Hayden Walsh Jr.
The series against England will commence October 31 at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua. The second game will be at the same venue before moving to Barbados for the final game. Following the ODI series, the two teams will participate in a five-match T20I series.
"Playing against England always brings new challenges and rekindles a rivalry that both our players and the Caribbean people are keen on. Somehow, we West Indies always find a way to enhance our game against England." stated Head Coach Daren Sammy. "This rivalry dates back decades, and after securing a victory at home last year for the first time in many years in an ODI series, we're ready to face a sturdy England squad again. It's always extraordinary to play at home, where the local fans energize every match. As we prepare for the ICC Men's World Cup in 2027, we've picked a balanced team that will undoubtedly compete with one of the most formidable teams in the world."
