Stunning Last-Minute Victory for Punjab FC Against Kerala Blasters
The game began at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Kochi with unexpected lineups from both teams, adding to the suspense for their fans. Kerala Blasters' Adrian Luna was absent due to a reported illness while Punjab's Luka Macjen started on the bench. The first half was slow with neither side managing a shot on goal, and chances remained scant.
Punjab FC thought they'd got their opening with Mushaga Bakenga netting the ball with a delightful chip, however, the goal was overturned due to offside. The first half thus ended with no major events, both teams heading into the break goalless.
Changes in the second half saw some momentum on the field. KBFC's Vibin Mohanan's arrival was clearly impactful for the team. Slowly the game started to unfurl, with Luka Macjen making a meaningful contribution, shooting at goal with his second touch after being subbed in.
However, the real turn of events took place in the match's final 10 minutes. A foul by Muhammed Saheef on Leon Augustine handed Punjab a clear penalty, taken and impressively converted by Luka Macjen in the 86th minute. As the visiting team seemed to have secured victory, an unexpected equaliser shot by Jesus Jimenez in injury time revitalised the Kerala Blasters. But the excitement was far from over. Filip Mrzljak immediately countered with a stunning 95th-minute winner bringing victory to Punjab FC and silencing the home crowd. This incredible victory sets an exciting tone at the beginning of the 2024-25 Indian Super League season.
