Durand Cup Match Between East Bengal and Mohun Bagan Cancelled

The Durand Cup group stage match between East Bengal and Mohun Bagan Super Giant, scheduled for Sunday at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata, has been cancelled. The decision to cancel the Derby was taken due to security reasons as Kolkata is witnessing protests after the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at the RG Kar Medical College. Each team will be awarded a point, with the fans receiving full refunds. It has been reported that further Durand Cup matches scheduled in Kolkata could be moved to Jamshedpur. Despite the cancellation, Mohun Bagan have made it to the quarterfinals as they have topped their group with seven points. East Bengal, though also having seven points, falls into second spot due to lower goal difference. East Bengal will nonetheless reach the quarterfinals alongside Punjab FC while the final quarterfinal spot will be decided between FC Goa and Shillong Lajong. The quarterfinals, scheduled on August 21, will largely take place in Jamshedpur, with one at Kokrajhar, Assam. The semifinals and final are to take place at the Salt Lake Stadium.
