Ravichandran Ashwin will miss West Indies tour of India series; Rohit is ready to lead
R Ashwin will not participate in upcoming West Indies tour of India in February, 2022.
The seasoned spinner, who has already secured his status in all formats of the game, is having treatment and will miss the series, according to sources within the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
Due to unavailability of coach Rahul David and some selectors, the selection for the 6 matches – 3 ODIs and as many T20Is against Kieron Pollard’s side had to be postponed (supposed to take place on 25th January). The meeting should be taken in the next few days.
Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma is anticipated to take over as captain of the ODI and T20I teams. Sources close to the BCCI have verified that he has fully recovered and is ready to hit the field. After missing the South Africa series due to a hamstring injury, it would be his first series as the full-time ODI skipper.
The majority of other players will be available for the series, including Virat Kohli, that, however, hasn’t sought any rest for the series until now. But it might be the case that selectors may remove some of the key players by drafting in some new ones. Jasprit Bumrah, the spearhead, may be rested, but Bhuvneshwar Kumar, his new ball partner, may struggle to make the ODI team.
Coming back to Ashwin, he should be back for the Sri Lanka series in February-March. Looking forward for seeing him hitting the field!
