Journey to the Top: From Babysitting to World Cup Victory
Sophie Devine and Amelia Kerr share a unique bond that dates back to their early years in Wellington, New Zealand. Sophie was Kerr's babysitter, watching over her as she took her first steps in the world of cricket, enamored by Devine's prowess on the field.
Amelia Kerr vividly remembers the White Ferns team, and particularly Sophie Devine, coming within reach of clinching the 2010 T20 World Cup title. That experience ignited Kerr's ambition of representing the White Ferns and chasing the elusive World Cup glory alongside her childhood hero, Sophie Devine, and cricket legend Suzie Bates.
"We don't necessarily deserve anything in sport," Kerr said. "But if there are any two people who do, it's Sophie and Suzie." Expressing her heartfelt emotions and nostalgia, Kerr recalled her primary school days where she dreamt and wrote about clinching the World Cup alongside her idols.
And dream became reality in 2024. Amelia Kerr, the Player of the Tournament, guided the White Ferns to their first ICC title since 2000. Emotions ran high as Kerr, batting with her long-time role models, realized a dream she had held dear since her young girl days.
Kerr rose to the occasion in Dubai, putting her body on the line in the sapping humidity for her team. In spite of cramps, Kerr continued to battle, contributing to New Zealand's challenging total of 158 runs. Her determination and grit were evident as New Zealand emerged champions, proving once again, sport doesn't owe you anything, but with persistent effort and unwavering dedication, dreams can come true.
