Samson vs Kishan: Who Will Make the Cut for India's T20I Squad?
Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan, both skilled wicketkeeper-batters, revolutionised their performances in the recent Duleep Trophy. Despite both players' centuries, Samson's 196 runs arguably eclipsed Kishan's good but lesser score of 123. However, Samson's last two T20Is marked by zero scores against Sri Lanka in July remain etched in memory. Samson has displayed strong form in the Duleep Trophy in recent times which might help him recover his lost position, making the competition remarkably intense.
Despite being sidelined a year ago, not necessarily due to his performance, Ishan Kishan was zealous on the field and almost secured his place in India's T20I. His consistent play granted him a place in the 50-over World Cup squad, sparking speculation that he could make a reappearance in the Indian team for the three-match T20I series against Bangladesh.
However, Kishan's chances of a recall may not come to fruition right away, as he will participate in the Irani Cup squad. In contrast, Samson will not participate in the match, providing the possibility for him to be prioritised for international duty; Samson's 30 T20Is provide a promising chance for him to step in as an opener.
The selectors are unlikely to select the existing openers, Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal, due to primary Test duties. This switch may offer Sai Sudarshan an opportunity, particularly considering his T20I in Zimbabwe.
The T20Is series against Bangladesh is scheduled to start in Gwalior on October 6, followed by games in New Delhi on October 9 and Hyderabad on October 12.
