Fitness Concerns Drive Captaincy Switch – Agarkar Explains

During India's triumphant T20 World Cup campaign, Hardik Pandya had fulfilled the vice-captain's role. However, after Rohit Sharma's retirement, the responsibility of leading the team has been given to Yadav instead.

In a press conference on Monday (July 22), Agarkar shed light on the reasons behind the move. He said, "Obviously, you want a captain that is likely to play all the games. Suryakumar Yadav is a deserving candidate and over, time we'll see how he develops into the role."

Agarkar also highlighted that Hardik's fitness had been a challenge, making it more complex for the coaching staff and selection committee. However, he emphasized that Pandya is still an essential component of the team. Agarkar concluded by expressing hope that Suryakumar possesses the required qualities for effective captainship.

Agarkar noted that the team has more time to examine things before the next T20 World Cup. He added that fitness is a significant issue, and the team needs players to be available most of the time. This reshuffling, according to Agarkar, will also better manage Hardik's role within the team.

Agarkar confirmed that Hardik had been informed about the change in roles. He stressed that such communication happens whenever there are changes in a player's role and Hardik was no exception. The change in leadership was outlined following careful consideration even before the World Cup, Agarkar clarified.
