Injury Forces Shreyanka Patil Out of Women's Asia Cup 2024
Patil, who had attained the injury during India's initiating game against Pakistan, is to be replaced by another promising talent, Tanuja Kanwer.
The incident occurred during the second game of the Asia Cup. Patil was trying to secure a catch and ended up fracturing the fourth finger of her left hand. Despite the injury, she bravely continued till the end of Pakistan's innings, bowling 3.2 overs and finished commendably with figures of 2-14. Pakistan, as a result, were restricted to 108.
Patil has previously suffered a hairline fracture on the same hand during WPL 2024, which caused her to miss a few games. However, she made a remarkable comeback at the business end of the tournament, picking up a four-fer in the final and securing the title win for RCB against DC. Her performance earned her the Purple Cap and the title of the Emerging Player of the Season.
Kanwer, who is selected to take Patil's place, had an impressive run in WPL 2024, ending as Gujarat Giants' leading wicket-taker with 10 wickets in eight games at an average of 7.13. This will be the 26-year-old left-arm spinner's first time playing for India, although she was already named amongst the travelling reserves for the Asia Cup. Kanwer also has been selected for the India A squad for the forthcoming multi-format tour of Australia, starting August 7.
Following the conclusion of the match against Pakistan, where India clinched victory by seven wickets with a chase done in just 14.1 overs, the team, led by Harmanpreet Kaur, is scheduled to face UAE in their second game on Sunday (July 21).
