Rani Rampal Ends Legendary Hockey Career
Rani Rampal, the iconic captain of the Indian women's hockey team, announced her retirement ending a journey studded with accolades and records. The 29-year-old former captain has been a dominant force in Indian hockey for over a decade, since debuting at 14 and scoring an impressive 205 goals in 254 matches.
Her contributions boosted the popularity of women's hockey in India, most notably leading the team to its highest-ever position at the Olympics -- the fourth place at the Tokyo 2021 Games.
"After almost 15 years of wearing the Indian jersey with pride, it's time for me to step off the field as a player and begin a new chapter. Hockey has been my passion, my life, and the greatest honor I could ever have asked for." Rani stated.
Starting her international career in 2008 in the Olympic qualifiers in Kazan, Russia, Rani advanced to become the team's captain and most prolific goal-scorer. Coming from humble beginnings in a small town in Haryana, she broke barriers and became an immutable part of the team.
Under Rani's leadership, India snapped a 13-year drought and clinched the Women's Asia Cup in 2017. She was also the first Indian woman nominated for the FIH Women's Young Player of the Year Award.
However, Rani hadn't played for India since 2023, following a decision by then coach Janneke Schopman in 2022. Despite her disappointment at being left out, and the lack of an explanation, Rani remained focused on her future in the sport.
Recently, she has transitioned to coaching, last year being appointed as the national coach for sub-junior women players. She's now a part of the support staff for the Soorma Hockey Club in the upcoming new Hockey India League.
