Sanath Jayasuriya Appointed as Full Time Head Coach of Sri Lanka Men's Team
Former Sri Lanka batter, Sanath Jayasuriya, has been appointed as the full time head coach of the Sri Lanka men's team. This noteworthy decision was taken by the Executive Committee of Sri Lanka Cricket.
Jayasuriya's contract is slated to commence from October 1, 2024 and will run until March 31, 2026. Previously named as the interim head coach of the team, Jayasuriya was initially entrusted with the job of a cricket consultant at SLC.
During his tenure as the interim head coach, he had the chance to guide the team in the white-ball series against India, held on home turf. Although India secured the T20I series, Sri Lanka showcased impressive performance in the ODIs, tying the first game and eventually winning the next two, thereby clinching the series. This remarkable victory marked Sri Lanka's first bilateral series win against India since 1997.
Jayasuriya also led his team in England, and despite losing the first two Tests, they pulled off a comeback, beating the hosts at The Oval in the third Test. As he steps into the full-time head coach role, his initial assignment will witness him guiding the team in a home series against West Indies. This series, beginning on October 13, will feature three T20Is and three ODIs.
