Neeraj Chopra's Remarkable Streak Ends at The 2024 Lausanne Diamond League
Neeraj Chopra's most remarkable streak was bound to end, and it did - on a clear, still Swiss evening at the Lausanne Diamond League of 2024. Up until now, he had sported an awe-inspiring record of 12 victories in 19 events post-Tokyo Olympics. His streak even included a silver at the Paris Olympics. However, on this day, he could not achieve his usual top spot.
Chopra's efforts scored four successive throws of above 82m, considerably low compared to his previous achievements. Facing fiercely competitive rivals such as Anderson Peters, Julian Weber, and Artur Felfner, who were all throwing above 86m, Chopra had to strive for an improved performance.
Despite fears of an injury sustained earlier, he chose to participate in this competition rather than returning to India. After five throws, he raised his mark to 85.58m, securing his place for a final attempt, as only the top three in Diamond League field events can go for the last throw.
Peters' sixth throw of 90.61m seemed to finalize the competition's result, mentioning what seemed obvious, 'we're not getting that first place'. However, Chopra, after a challenging evening, distilled his determination into one final 89.49m hurl – the second furthest distance he has ever thrown.
This final throw, notwithstanding, was not enough to secure him the win. Despite ending his remarkable streak, Chopra proved he remains a powerful contender in the realm of javelin throw, leaving the crowd in anticipation for his next appearance.
