Due to a stress fracture, Jasprit Bumrah will not compete in the T20 World Cup

About

Jasprit Bumrah, India's top paceman, is expected to miss the ICC T20 World Cup due to a back stress fracture, according to news agency PTI, citing BCCI sources. This could be a major blow to India's hopes of competing well at the tournament in Australia. While the Board of Control for Cricket in India has yet to officially clarify the situation, Bumrah's withdrawal from India's series opener against South Africa in Thiruvananthapuram on Wednesday has not been encouraging.

What they said

Just minutes before the toss at Greenfield Stadium, the BCCI received word of Bumrah's injury. "Jasprit Bumrah reported back pain during India's practice session on Tuesday. After being examined by the BCCI Medical Team, he was determined to be ineligible for the opening T20I," BCCI tweeted.

The loss of Bumrah and Jadeja will be devastating for India, the senior official said. "We didn't expect that things would pan out as they have. Bumrah was rested for the Asia Cup specifically to manage his workload. Now it remains a question as to whether he was even fit enough to play in the Australia series. "

Stress fractures in the back do not need surgery, but they do take a long time to heal.

Former West Indies fast bowling legend Michael Holding said that Bumrah was always a candidate for back ailments due to his slinging movement, which places a lot of strain on his back during loading.

Overview

India's death bowling has been a problem, as Captain Rohit Sharma has acknowledged. Due to Bhuvneshwar's dismal performances, veteran paceman Bhuvneshwar Kumar has been under fire, and with Bumrah's absence, the young Arshdeep Singh and Harshal Patel will be under pressure to produce.

The last two T20Is against Australia were played by Bumrah, who also missed the Asia Cup because of a back issue and was practising at the National Cricket Academy.

A senior BCCI official spoke to PTI under the condition of anonymity and said, "Bumrah is not going to play in the World T20 for sure. He has a serious back condition. It's a stress fracture and he could be out for a period of six months. "

For the T20 World Cup, India has players like Mohammed Shami and Deepak Chahar on the standby list; one of them may now be called up to the starting lineup.
